Those '70s Jeans

Every now and then, you hear a seamstress talk about sewing for the life you actually lead. You can find the time to sew yourself 20 formal gowns a year, never have the occasion to wear them, and still complain every morning about having nothing to wear or examine your life and wardrobe and figure out what's missing.

I've been getting better and better at this, but today I realized there was one article of clothing that could make getting dressed for school a quicker, more pain-free process the mornings all I want to do is throw on a pair of jeans and a Beatles t-shirt - my collection is growing and I like to show them off!

Nothing from the 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s would work for me.

Only the 70s will do! Needless to say, this is a little out of my comfort zone..

But they look pretty cool, and I can get behind anything wide-legged! I haven't picked out a pattern yet, but I'll keep you all updated! I was hired at a certain fabric store recently and this will be the first thing I use my employee discount on.

Yay History! Dress

I got both of these fabrics at Hancock's the first time I went in to explore. At first I envisioned the Civil War print as a skirt but I figured it probably wasn't something I could pair with many tops so I decided on a dress instead. Lee and Grant are in cotton, and the top is navy blue rayon.

I used Simplicity 3408, from 1940. This was a chicken or the egg situation: I had the fabric before I ever knew what pattern I wanted to use! Thankfully I had enough of each, and some leftover.

It does button all the way up but I'll probably never wear it like that! The belt is from Goodwill: I really stink at making them and when I do they're not the eyelet type, so this one's much better and actually useful, which is nice.

The sleeves get their super poofy prowess from a sleeve stiffener! This is the first time I've ever had to do this for a pattern and it really was easy! I didn't have any scrap taffeta which was one thing the instructions recommended, so I used a red-and-white striped fabric (on purpose, just a secret for me to laugh about!) that was pretty stiff instead, and that worked fine!

And yes, I am a history nerd! I love seeing how many novelty dresses in the 1950s had fabrics with Egyptian hieroglyphs, or images of coins from Ancient Rome and things like that. Do you have a favorite novelty fabric motif?

1930s hairdos!

Thanks for all the sweet comments on the last entry! I got a few comments on my hair (again, so sweet, thank you!) and I thought I'd elaborate on my hair situation. :P

As much as I loved having my hair super short, I think the inevitable happened and I got a little bored with my lack of styling options. I was a little uncertain because my hair is so thin and straight, but then it just so happened that I went one too many weeks without a haircut and there was a bob! Almost. My shortest layers still have a little way to go, and once they're at the right length I'll get everything cleaned up. I'm keeping the back short, above the nape, because I can't stand hair touching my neck! I've been practicing pin curl sets the past week or so and they're not quite stellar enough to talk about yet, so I thought I might share a little of my hair inspiration!

Any tips or suggestions you can offer about pin curls or achieving these 'dos? I've never exactly been skilled in this area - if you were looking at my family photos you'd see lots of short hairdos on the ladies because none of us can figure it out!

30s Summer Wear

Hello all! I meant to post this a little sooner but I got a little wrapped up in school and cake making for my nephew's birthday party tomorrow!

This has been my stand-by summer outfit. I used Wearing History's repro Sportswear Separates pattern and a cheapie 70s halter pattern, instead of trying to go the more expensive and rare route of something authentically 1930s.

Both components came together very quickly and simply, the top in an embroidered linen and the trousers in 100% navy linen, both from JoAnns. The very cool thing about the halter is that it could easily be made to be reversible because of the way it's made, so I highly suggest you search for a pattern of your own with the fewest amount of pieces!

You might already be familiar with Wearing History reproduction patterns if you follow Lauren's blog. Lauren is so sweet and talented, and she brings her impeccable taste and style to her shop in the patterns she chooses to repro. Check them out if you haven't already!*

You can probably see that I did not check a mirror before taking these photos, haha. I've since gotten a hair cut as well, yeesh.

Uh, whoops! Last week I drove back home to Virginia to spend a couple weeks with my family while my husband is busy attending pilot classes. June and July are busy months here because of birthdays and graduations, so it seemed like a good idea to just stay put! I'm taking a few summer classes as well so the blog and sewing too have not been on the forefront of my mind.

I do have some sewing to share and want to get a lot done this summer, so I'll get on that! I just wanted to apologize for now for the quiet on my end. Thanks!

Who's Got the Button?

Thank you all so much for your comments on the last post! I wore the dress to pick my dad up from the airport, walk around Omaha's Old Market and go to dinner.

I think matching button and buckle sets (like on this dress!) add a nice touch to home-sewn clothing. I love to browse for unique colors and designs, but I try not to buy them unless I have a project in mind or I'd have so many buttons and not enough days in the year to sew clothing for them!

Summer-y McCall 8404

Here is McCall 8404! This was probably the easiest pattern purchase I ever made. Early to mid 50s? Check. Something interesting happening around the neck? Check. The opportunity for many buttons? Check, check, check check check.

It has such a killer shape.

The weather the day of my birthday last week was actually a perfect match for this dress, but it just looks like it belongs to the months of June or July. The belt may have hindered my cupcake consumption, anyway.

The fabric is 100% cotton and the buttons and matching buckle were a set from Etsy. I'd stay and talk more but I have an air bed to inflate - my dad flies in tomorrow morning for a short visit! Have a great week everyone. :)

Repro Review: Jitterbuggin, my early birthday present!

Long before April I had an idea of what I wanted for my birthday, it was just a matter of waiting patiently. I don't remember how I first came across Jitterbuggin, but the shop was quickly tucked away into my Etsy favorites once I did.

Less than a month ago I dropped a hint to my husband and my order arrived a few days ago, just a little ahead of my birthday next week! Kim is great, and we picked out a nice cotton broadcloth for the pants instead of a wool fabric.

There's accidental flash in this photo (safe for work! I mean the light that pops up from the camera ;) ) but it has a good full view of my entire outfit from yesterday:

Also in this picture, besides my bike (I should probably move it but I love the color): my first dress form! When I got to Nebraska I really thought it'd be nice to revitalize my Etsy and a dress form felt like a must-have. I have been dutifully checking out thrift and antique stores in all of the neighboring areas and I hope to reveal my finds soon!

Repro Review: EvaDress 7273

EvaDress' Ladies' Blouse pattern circa 1933.

This was the very last project I finished at my old house before packing up my sewing machine and all the fabric, tools and notions that go with it.

I was a little intimidated at first when I saw the instructions - a short and sweet bullet list that, typical of the era, assumes you know how to sew and are familiar with most of the terminology. As long as this isn't your first project, you should be familiar enough with setting in sleeves and creating a narrow hem for the blouse to come together as quickly and easily as it did for me.

Looking a bit wrinkly - it's hard to iron pleated, gathered sleeves!

The fit of this pattern is great, and I was actually able to omit the snap closings on either side and can just pull the blouse over my head (which was great considering the short amount of time I was working with and how much I hate sewing on snaps).

The only thing I will point out to those who are about to make this, is that you are instructed to cut the left-side bow pieces a few inches shorter than the ties for the right, which I completely ignored, fearing a forever floppy, uneven bow. I would suggest that you follow the instructions as written besides that step, and if you reach the end and decide that your bow would look better with one tie shortened, then you could easily make that alteration.

All in all, this is a great basic blouse with enough detail to keep it interesting and open to many variations. If you're a 30s loving lady I highly recommend it! Right now it is only available in one size (32 bust) but I'm sure if you let Xandra know how much you love it that could change one day. ;)

Brunch

I've been settling into my new abode for just over a week now, so I thought it was high time I start posting again! Sunday morning we went to a vegan bake sale in Omaha and had a great brunch at the restaurant hosting it.

I know mirror shots are lame, I'm still trying to find a good corner for these outfit shots!

The weather was perfect for my new late 30s/early 40s suit from craftycrowvintage - it was nice out but just enough chill in the air to warrant the jacket, which was the perfect weight to keep me comfortable. I wore navy blue 40s peep toe pumps and tucked a vintage hankie from my grandma into the breast pocket:

The day just kept getting better, so once home I changed into a cardigan and saddle shoes to take my dog for a walk and run a few errands.

I hope everyone had a great weekend! I'm so happy to see Spring. I've been faithfully beefing up my fabric stash and I'm very inspired to sew, though instead of clothing a new doggie bed might be at the top of the list. :)

Sewing (and sneezing) into spring

With my move becoming more imminent by the day, my home state of Virginia apparently sought out to give me a going-away present: another cold (though I suspect it actually has more to do with my sinuses). Luckily it came after finishing all the projects I wanted to (which I'll be posting about soon, promise!) and not before getting a little glimpse of spring. Despite my husband (Mr. C?) telling me about the snow in Nebraska today, I've finally fallen into the ranks of bloggers and sewers (-ists?) awaiting warmer weather, shorter sleeves, and better footwear .

The sheer number of visions I have of dancing blouses, skirts, and dresses in my staple colors of white, blue, and brown, mixed with pinks and purples, then adding in florals, stripes, and polka dots, necessitated that I plan out all those ideas so I can make use of the patterns and fabrics I already have, and not wind up with too much of this and none of that.

This peak at my juvenile sketches clues you in to the shortage of blouses my wardrobe is suffering (though there are a couple of skirts in the mix). Thankfully I have some great patterns from EvaDress, The Vintage Pattern Lending Library, and the talented and beautiful seamstress, Lauren, who's behind Wearing History, in addition to a stack of vintage patterns.

And I must admit, after seeing Colette Pattern's Sencha blouse made up in so many different, wonderful ways, I kinda want that too!

Who else has started to plan their spring/summer wardrobe? What color or motif do you keep picking out?

Going-away party

Sunday my sister threw me a going-away party! I wore my favorite 50s black velvet jumper dress with a new blouse - you may recognize it from the first practical wardrobe plan post! I used some buttons from my stash and a blue & purple plaid poplin from Denver Fabrics (or maybe Fashion Fabrics Club :x).

I really like this pattern, it sort of reminds me of Snow White! The sleeve style was easy to sew (no setting in!) but turned out a little unflattering.

I took the picture after the party because I didn't remember many others being taken - but I assure you I'm not making this all up! ;)

Never enough ruffles..

Here is the delightfully ruffle-y top that came from the same EvaDress pattern as the jumpers! I finished this probably a week ago, and it has set off a sewing frenzy. I made it with gauze and it has happily been added to my arsenal of white blouses. I can't wait to wear it in the spring and summer!

As I've been sewing from reproduction patterns a lot lately, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a review? Or maybe a sew-along! I have a few more patterns from EvaDress to get to eventually and a finished skirt made with Past Patterns.

New old dress

I bought this dress a while ago and it's color palette meant I instinctively put it in the "to sell" side of my closet. I loved the heavy glass buttons, mother of pearl buckle and the fit, but didn't think I could pull of that light tan color.

Not my messy room!

Because of my upcoming move (less than a month to go!) I've been going through and re-evaluating all of my things, and tried this dress on again. The color still isn't the best on me but it's on the other side of my closet now!

I'm doing pretty well with my sewing projects (including the blouse that goes with those EvaDress jumpers) and will post soon!

So I have a new excuse for not posting: crazy snow storms! My area has just been hit with another and the power at my house is expected to be out for another day (I've been rescued and am at my sister's for the night). But, I'm looking to the future! My husband is in Nebraska at our new apartment, setting everything up as I type! This has put me back in the sewing mood and I feel ready to cut into a million projects.

I leave you with my favorite room in any home, that I can't wait to fill with appliances, pots and pans, and some heavenly scents: the kitchen!

Hello everyone!! I'm sorry for my absence, I can't believe it's almost been two weeks! I've been sick and then added computer troubles to that, so while I wasn't able to throw together a post, I have been keeping up with my blog reader thanks to my little netbook. I have to admit that during this downtime I've enjoyed the excuse to lay around all day reading, and have managed to cross a few titles off my reading list.

I'm still not quite feeling up to muster and haven't been able to sew, but I didn't want to keep you all waiting any longer! Here is the last project I told you about, both views of EvaDress' mid-30s jumper pattern.

Next to conquer is the blouse from the same pattern! I highly recommend this pattern - they come together very quickly and are so versatile. I've already worn them each!

Usually my love for old music stops around 1964 - with certain groups like The Beatles (of course) and The Zombies being an exception - and picks back up with a few modern musicians way, way down the line (no 80s or 90s music for me). But a couple of weeks ago I caught a special on TV about British Invasion groups and added one new band I absolutely love to the "exceptions" list: Gerry and the Pacemakers.

Of course, I also ignore the fashions that came after 1959, so you won't see any mini skirts here!

Holiday fog

Hello all! I seem to be in that holiday haze that's hard to break out of: I meant to post a Tuned In & Turned Out yesterday but got caught up in some chores! Not exactly a great start for the blog in this new year! ;)

My brother David and his son in the front, then my brother-in-law, my sister and her two children, my dad, myself, and my husband Luis.

As I've hinted at before, I'm moving to Nebraska shortly, where my husband will be stationed in a few weeks. In the summer I'll also be going back to school so I need to make the most of these next few weeks and sew while I have the time! And, y'know, make less short-sleeved things while there are reports of snow for every weekend.

Black & White

I love this pattern that was available on eBay a little while ago. The dress by itself is cute, but the very feminine tuxedo treatment to the view on the right is drool-worthy! I don't practice layering very often - I like to throw on one thing and be done with it - but if I could get those kinds of results I might try a little harder! The weather is sort of demanding it right now, actually.

I'm finally home and I can't wait to catch up on all of your blog posts - there are almost 200 of them to get through!!

Capes, capelets and cloaks

I live, and have always lived, in a state that gets all four seasons. There's always snow in the winter and it can get pretty cold here, yet there have always been times where I've refused to wear coats.. now is one of those times. I hate jumping from cold to uncomfortably toasty to cold again, and having to carry or wear my jacket somewhere that is very liberal with their heater and/or packed with people, so I'm shunning them completely.

I'll consider giving in to cold weather demands only if we can compromise:

I want a cape! It's the perfect solution: it has warmth (but not too much), can be easily removed, and there is no restriction of my arm movements. What say ye, Santa?

Fabric Shopping for the 1940s

It's the clothing made, mended, and re-purposed during the wartime years that are brought to mind when we think of 1940s fashion. Due to rationing and a lack of materials, styles took on smoother, cleaner lines and were pared down: skirts lost a little fullness, hems came to right below the knee, and some of the detailing and overall "frou frou" of the previous decade was left behind. By no means, however, could you call the results boring or plain.

When looking through catalogs from the era, the colors available seem to be mildly saturated, a lot of them earthy. Most of the combinations aren't highly contrasted.

Since my first post of the series, Casey of Casey's Elegant Musings wrote a very helpful and informative Vintage Pattern Primer that I highly recommend you check out, whether you've never sewed with one before or are an expert. I also found a vintage sewing pattern directory put together by Sarai at Sweet Sassafras, which is a collection of many of the sites that sell vintage patterns, aside from Etsy and eBay, organized by their price and the quality of their selection.

Think rayon, wool, and cotton in solids or floral prints - you can go small or big with them depending on your taste and what looks good on you. Search the usual round-up of fabric sources: Denver Fabrics, Fashion Fabrics Club, and your local fabric or craft stores. Don't forget the typical patterns like plaid, stripes, gingham, etc. are always popular and used a lot.

Trip to the Library

I haven't had an outfit post in a long time, here is one to fill the void! I went to the library, and you can probably tell it's also been a while since I've done that, judging by the number of books I'm holding. I'm wearing a 1930s crocheted blouse from Etsy, my handmade trousers, and Payless saddle shoes.

I hope I haven't been too neglectful of this blog! Unfortunately on Thanksgiving I didn't get a single picture of myself or the dress I made taken, but I'll try to change that soon. It was so comfortable and didn't interfere with the tradition of over-eating at all. ;)

I have most of my Christmas gift shopping done already so I'm hoping to have the time over the next couple of weeks to get some PWP sewing done and will be sharing my progress with you!

Second, sorry for a few days of blogging absence, my head has been elsewhere! Saturday evening my husband gets in from Texas, and I'm very excited, as you can expect! Trousers!

Before starting on my dress for the holidays, I really wanted to knock out a pair of brown gabardine trousers using my copy of the VFL's 1930s Nautical Influence Hollywood Pants Set 8572.

I have a really nice, bright floral fabric to make the blouse part with but as it is so spring/summer-y looking, it'll have to wait!

I am hoping to get this smart 1930s vest pattern for Christmas (fingers crossed!) which I think will coordinate well with these slacks and help me get that much more wear out of the few separates I have!

Now, I have a deadline of about a week now to complete the aforementioned dress, wish me luck (and have a great weekend)! :)

Fabric Shopping for the 1930s

*This is my first installment for a series of posts about popular fabric/pattern choices in the 30s-50s and where you can buy vintage-inspired fabric to fit each decade! I hope you enjoy it, and please tell me what I can do to improve!*

Not dissimilar from motifs found on the now nearly iconic cotton feedsack dress, a quick look at a 1930s catalog will speak to the popularity of small, floral prints - but geometric and abstract prints also abound. The color palette tends toward more muted, subtle shades, but isn't a rule!

It goes without saying that polka dots, plaids, stripes, gingham and checks, etc. were all mainstays then, and still are now.

Rayon was becoming increasingly popular and was used alongside cotton, silk, and wool. Lame, satin, and chiffon ruled evening wear.

eQuilter.com has a section devoted to thirties and retro prints that is worth checking out. I really like the 'Aunt Grace' collection. However if you aren't used to spending over $5 for a yard of fabric, you may want to hold out for a sale or just buy enough to make a blouse.

The same goes for ReproDepot, whose prices average at about $6-7 per half yard, but they have some of the cutest fabrics I've ever seen.

Standard sites like Denver Fabrics or Fashion Fabrics Club. I know many people prefer to do the bulk of their fabric shopping offline, but the only sources I have locally are JoAnn's and Wal*Mart, which sometimes leaves me with slim pickings.

If your situation is similar, DF and FFC have the crepe, rayon and gabardine you need to sew up the staples of a 1930s wardrobe, and many of the prints to flesh it out.

If you are nervous about ordering something that may arrive different from what you expected, you can order samples from both sites, and if you need a wild guess at how something may drape, try looking for something with a similar fabric content at your local fabric store. It may be a different color than what you are shopping for online, but you will have more information about your purchase.

At your local fabric and/or craft store, look for interesting calico prints in the quilting fabric aisles.

I hope everyone who celebrated Halloween had a good time! I'm enjoying see what everyone's costumes were as the posts start filtering through. :) I didn't collect any candy myself, but I tagged along with my sister's family to see my niece go trick-or-treating and went through a haunted house (.. eyes half closed and holding on to my sister's sweater).

I thought it'd be boring if I didn't have a costume myself, so I threw on two things you've seen before (my blouse from a 1930s pattern and black velvet skirt) but decided with a little make-up magic, I could be a marionette doll. I also wore white tights and black mary janes to add to the look.

I already have a growing list of ideas for next year and I hope with a little planning I'll be able to sew my whole costume!

A few days ago, I bought the cutest dress ever, partially because it was the Cutest. Dress. Ever., and partially because it came with a story:

I noticed this "candy striped" dress even smelled like candy as I took it out of it's packaging.

Tulip Puff Sleeve Blouse

I finished my little 30s puff sleeve blouse last night/early this morning! I had to have a picture right away, so excuse the fact that you can still see the blue water soluble pen marks, the bathroom, it's a mirror shot, I look jaundiced, etc.!

I threw over it a black velvet jumper I got in the mail yesterday from bootstrapvintage. The pattern was Butterick 7210, from eBay. I don't recall where I got that fabric but the pattern is little tulips and it reminded me of a feedsack, so I thought it'd be a perfect match to the pattern! The white accents were actually an idea out of necessity, because I don't think I had more than a yard or so to work with!

Now I have a small mountain of fabric accumulated from taking advantage of a couple sales, and I don't know where to start! A smart choice would probably be Advance 8323, the dress I plan to either wear for Thanksgiving day, or when my husband and I celebrate our one-year anniversary (two weeks late, because he won't be home before!):

Casey gave me the great idea to do a post about where I've been buying my fabric, so keep an eye out for that! I'd really like to include some tips on buying prints similar to what they would have used in the 1930s through the 50s, if you're going for historical accuracy. If you have any of your own, please share! :)

Tugging Along

Yesterday my friend Ashley came over for a 'Stitch 'n' Bitch' session; I worked on my blouse and she a coat while we updated each other on the goings-on since our last meeting.

I got as far as the side seams and the front facing piece before my machine decided to call it quits until it gets a little oil; whoops! I went ahead and sewed on four buttons. They are the cutest little things with rhinestone centers!

Hopefully I'll get to the store to pick up some machine oil before I'm out of steam, and the next time you see this fabric it'll be a finished garment! :) Have a great week!

Night at the Fredericksburg Pub

Hello all! Sorry for the lack of posting on Tuesday - I kept myself busy all day and kept pushing off doing the post until it wasn't Tuesday anymore! It'll be back next week. :)

Tonight my dad, sister and I went to a British Invasion trivia night at a local restaurant. I foresee us being the annoying champions to beat because our table won both gift certificates, keychains, and a 95.9 FM shirt that my dad was really after, haha. What I'm really there to win is the premium bundle of The Beatles: Rock Band, which they'll be giving away at the end of the month by a random drawing of names.

I wore the first blouse I made paired with a black velvet skirt from the 40s and black mary jane heels. I picked this skirt up at a local vintage store for a mere $1! It was marked down because it needed a new zipper but that was an easy and inexpensive fix.

Here's a good full view of the skirt, but it's an even better picture of me giving the thumbs up with my eyes closed, about to fall over, in blur-o-vision, if you were curious.

1930s Dress and Suspender Skirt

Here are my two most recent sewing projects! The first is a full, tartan corduroy skirt with suspenders from a 50s pattern. This was so quick and simple: there were only three pattern pieces! And no gathering!

It's also my first skirt for my Practical Wardrobe Plan, though I need to incorporate more solids to actually be practical! :P

I'm not sure why I waited to sew this until sleeveless weather ended, but it works great as a jumper with a blouse underneath. I wore it again to see a movie with my brother earlier today (note to zombie fans: go see Zombieland!) with a cardigan. It's a 30s reproduction pattern originally from the Vintage Fashion Library, but purchased from Etsy.

I've been receiving a steady flow of patterns in the mail lately, most of which are for blouses, which I hope to show you soon!

Cold Weather Prep

As I'm jumping in to my "Practical Wardrobe Plan" right at the start of cool weather, I've been thinking about what I'll need, besides bottoms and tops, to accessorize and layer with. I'm thinking purely in fabric terms as I don't really like to wear jewelry - I don't own any bracelets, I rarely wear necklaces, and compared to the thirteen holes I used to have in my ears, now I only wear clip-ons or screw-backs when I'm feeling particularly dressy. I even forget to wear my wedding rings most of the time!

Here's the short list I came up with:

1. Vests. Cardigans are great to throw on for a little added warmth, but nothing pulls an outfit together quite like a vest.

I'm envisioning a corduroy in brown and a nice tweed, though I'd love to throw in a pop of color, too.

2. Over the knee socks. I don't know how thick women of the past wore their stockings (or how long), but last winter I heavily relied on my trusty pair of charcoal Super Basics from Sock Dreams. Not only for wearing around the house, but to replace tights when it was extra chilly. This year I'd like to add navy, brown, and a pair of O Lovelies to my repertoire.

3. Hats! The more obvious choice for winter warmth and style. I hope to crochet one in white to go with all my winter coats, preferably in this style:

It looks like a goofy elf cap at first, but after seeing Ginger Rogers wear a similar style at the beginning of We're Not Married, it really grew on me. It looks especially glamorous in the upper right-hand view.

I hope everyone is enjoying the start of fall on this side of the globe! I spent most of my day yesterday at the State Fair and later in the evening I could actually see my breath! It was a refreshing change but a definite prompt for me to get my coats on hangers and make this post. :)

Heavy Duty Sewing Plan!

Lately I've decided that to get my wardrobe where I'd like it to be, I'd really need to chain myself to my sewing machine! I love my small collection of vintage dresses, but no matter what I say to convince myself otherwise, I just cannot put one on when I know I'm going to be home all day, running to and fro in the kitchen or sitting in odd positions while I work on crafty things that would probably wear out 50-year old seams. How can I confine such cute things to baking cookies when they deserve a public life? Of course, besides functionality, it also has a lot to do with being able to choose patterns, colors, and getting the right fit. So, I thought I'd share my brainstorming with you!

Before I broke out Photoshop, I had sketched out all the pieces I thought I'd need to make a wardrobe full of pieces I could mix and match: a portrait blouse, a slim 30s styled skirt with kick pleats in the back, an army of full skirts..

Aside from separates, I'm also going to pick out a few dress patterns that are perfect for making in a myriad of styles, like a good shirtwaist pattern (of course).

What do you guys think? :) What style of garments and colors, etc. are indispensable to your wardrobe?

Hello all! Sorry for my lapse in posting - Tuesdays and Saturdays are getting sort of routine around these parts due to all the projects I keep picking up! I don't know what it is about the middle of the week that makes me so productive!

This week I used Gertie's tutorial for a full gathered skirt to use up some of Elvis fabric I bought that you've all seen in your local Wal*Mart's meager fabric section.

The first couple times I saw it, I just complained about the lack of Beatles fabric, but then I thought of the perfect use for it. Tonight with my dad and a few other members of my family, I am going to see "Jukebox Heroes Live!", which is a couple of brothers impersonating the likes of the Beatles, Elvis, Buddy Holly, and more. I've only seen Beatles tribute concerts before so I'm especially excited to see other impersonations in lieu of the real thing.

I also initially ignored this fabric as being kind of tacky, but it makes a perfect, silly, casual skirt, meaning this tutorial now has a place in my wardrobe, as it will also give me an excuse to buy Beatles and I Love Lucy fabric (as unfortunately 'psychedelic' as Beatles fabric is).

I meant to post progress shots as I went along, but I ended up doing most of my sewing in about two-hour intervals at night, over three or so days. I couldn't get good lighting and I don't have a dressform, so none of my pictures were very impressive anyway! This morning all I had to do was sew the hem before throwing it on for lunch with my dad.

Ignore the belt and the fact that it is riding up in the picture! I made the self-fabric belt, but can't figure out how to cover the buckle. I'm working on it!

Afterward I had my first crochet class at JoAnn's. I hope it's not too long before I can make hats and tops!

Needs More Bows!

I had an unexpected run in with Jessica, or Annabelle Rose, today! She is just as adorable in person as in her photos and had the cutest outfit on! We bumped in to each other (not literally!) in an antique store in Historic Fredericksburg after my lunch there turned into a shopping excursion.

Old fashioned clip on bow tie, 1940s vogue hat pattern, white bow hat!

I got the above goodies at that store (plus another 20s-30s hat for $5!), then picked up three more fall-and-winter geared items that I'll be talking about soon!

This week I need to get back on track with my sewing. I haven't made any progress since my last post besides transferring marks and making tailor's tacks (I know! but I told you I was slow), and I need to finish this project and start a few before I start my knitting and crochet classes and am completely swept away by that for a month!

I feel terrible I haven't had an outfit post in so long! I guess it is normal that my true nature would eventually be revealed.. I am a huge homebody, and I just haven't gotten the chance to go out lately!

This has been a perfectly low-key day, but not so much that I feel lazy. Yesterday I stayed up wee into the early hours of morning copying patterns from the Commercial Pattern Archives (the free week trial ends today!), and made a mock-up of a hat today after trying to absorb as much information as one can from scans of the front and back of an envelope.

Lauren of Dear Golden tagged me, so here are my 'ten things' (I was going to stop at 5 but I pushed on):
1. I've been vegan for over a year, and before that I was vegetarian for five years.
2. I met my husband the first day of middle school, we sat next to each other in homeroom.
3. I'm obsessed with bows as details. Even if I wouldn't normally like something, I will find myself irresistibly drawn to it if it has a bow, even it's just one and it's microscopic. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this on everyone's blog by now. See? Obsessed.
4. This year I went to the county fair and instead of going on any rides, I used all my money to buy feed and stayed in the animal barns.
5. I am really, very stubborn. I'd consider it a strength.
6. My favorite shows growing up were all on Nick at Nite: I Dream of Jeannie, Betwitched, Mister Ed, and I Love Lucy. I still catch Lucy on TV as often as I can, Lucille Ball was an amazing woman. I also spend a lot of time watching M*A*S*H.
7. I am greatly influenced by my dad, as you can see in #6, and also in my taste in music and my sense of humor. We have a really great relationship.
8. It's come to the point where I don't know how many tattoos I have. I'm either always finishing something, or starting a new one!
9. If I didn't want to go to culinary school, I'd want to be a history or anthropology student. I'm thinking about doing both.
10. I'm really determined to be the owner of a successful small business and sort-of ignore any other possible way to live. This is why I try so many new things and tend to throw myself into them.

Closet Space

After seeing so many sources proclaim the virtue of storing vintage clothing folded in plastic tubs, I started to feel a bit guilty, so the other day I finally went out and bought two 58-gallon bins that would fit nicely at the top of my closet.

As you can see, they still have quite a bit of space in them. I just can't get over wanting to see everything hanging up (in not-very-specific color order), and I imagine I'd cause more distress than the hangers if I had to sort through boxes every morning.

The one at the left is for my not-everyday wear.. namely that gold brocade dress. I also have my green dream dress in there, but upon looking up the best way to clean it (it smells like 70 year old sweat, which is likely the issue), I found silk shouldn't be stored in plastic!

To the right I have some vintage knit outfits (recently won on eBay!), avoiding a stretched-out fate. What does your closet look like right now? Are you very particular about organization or the storage of your older items?

I'm a lover of 50s music first and foremost and, since the beginning, I've been trying to find a way to work this in with my regular posts. I seem to always have a song in rotation that I never get sick of playing on repeat, day after day after day. Mini-Announcement :)

For the past weeks, I've been carefully writing my blog posts so that when I was almost to 50(!) I could make an announcement, and this is it! I know 50 posts isn't much of a milestone, compared to some of those who have been around for years, but I could never even manage a diary as a child, so it's a big deal to me! :)

I've been able to meet so many people and connect with them over traits I thought I was alone in having, so I'd like to give back in a little way to all of you!

Here's a few shots from a silly little 'photoshoot' I did with my sister yesterday! When I told my dad about the Mad Men casting contest, he insisted that my sister and I enter, even though it was the last day of the contest! Unfortunately the site was full of errors last night when we tried to submit, but it was still a lot of fun! Cool Down

I have been spending the last few days in a sort of stupor that is just barely relaxing because, despite my protestations, summer is still in full effect, wreaking havoc indoors and out.

I braved the sun's beating rays just long enough yesterday to dip into one of my favorite antique stores and buy two hats, then retreat into my shady abode where all fans are pointed in my direction.

I never realized before just how fun hats could be, and since they're another one of those all-weather accessories, here's enough hat-spiration to last you through summer and into fall.

Oh, you say this is the perfect time to plug that certain hat contest run by a certain vintage vixen that you have all heard about by now?

I couldn't resist!

Premature Adieu to Summertime

Here's a glimpse at the new project I started earlier this week! At this point I just have all the pieces cut out.. I am a slow, slow worker when it comes to sewing, just about each step gets its own day. I hope that if I do things slowly, I'm more apt to notice mistakes, rather than seeing them too late. I don't like doing things more than once if I don't have to!

It's official: summer is over for me. Any longing for play suits, crop tops and un-buttoned skirts worn over shorts has been set aside and will be forgotten until I say the same thing I am saying to you now about winter in February or March. Straw hats are dead to me, I want felt and velvet!

Of course, this is unrealistic because I live in Virginia and it will remain all too hot throughout August and into September, but a girl wants what she wants. Tonight I will make lemon bars as a last 'hoorah', then I want nothing more to do with hot, muggy weather. Anyone with me?

Two of a Kind

Shop update! I meant to get them up a little earlier in the day but I had some last minute cleaning to do before a real estate agent came over.

I updated mostly with dresses, but there's also an amazing blouse, a 20s bathing suit or romper, and a 60s metal butterfly belt!

One of the bittersweet things about buying and wearing vintage is the fact that you are always dealing with a rarity. On the up side, you can say with a fair amount of certainty that no one else will ever own a blouse like yours. Your outfit is completely original, congratulations! But the down side is.. hey, what if that cute blouse isn't yours and you'd like to own it as well? Or you *ahem* find a great dress that isn't in the best condition and want a better one, plus two in every color?

The chance that you'd find another dress by that designer and in that print and in your size and in your favorite color and in good, wearable condition, is slim to none. That makes you a little anxious, no? That's why I was so surprised when I saw this dress on Etsy:

I own that dress! I bought it back in February from Salvage Life. So now I’m proud I can fully recommend one of my favorite dresses to someone else: it's comfortable, well-made, and extremely cute!

One of a Kind

I made it to the Big Flea Market in Northern Virginia and it was great! This time there were more than a few dealers with vintage clothes, shoes, and hats, and I would have been more than happy to spend the day just staring at what some booths had to offer, like this one:

To the right of the shoes and hats, were three long racks, completely full! Unfortunately I had already spent the money I brought (oh, that's right, there's two buildings..) but what I really wanted I couldn't have walked away with anyways.. there were two or three pairs of shoes I'd have volunteered to eat from but they were all very narrow!

Just like The Perfect White Dress, I've been holding out for something special in that perfect shade of green, and I found it! It's not without its issues, so I can't give it the kind of weekly wear I'd like to, but that will make the few occasions I do choose to wear it all the more special. I may just begin a search for a similar pattern, because I feel like an absolute stunner in it!

Plaid Perfection

In the past week I've flown from coast to coast and experienced some drastic weather changes: I left for a chilly, windy Northern California landscape (without any sweaters - I mean, come on, it's July!) and came back to a Virginia summer that offered me no more mercy. It's in the 90s and feels like the 100s.

I also came back to this little number and it struck me how perfect plaid is for every season. In the summer it makes you think of picnics, and in fall or winter it brings back memories of pumpkin farms, hay rides and cabins nestled in the snow. (I hope someone really has these memories, I embellish my own.) As long as the sleeves are short ones, you can keep a plaid dress hanging in your closet all year, either by going bare-legged or warming yourself up with thick tights and a cardigan.

There are also some great dresses on eBay at the moment (including the best mint green one) but I'm not quite sure I want to be responsible for an insane bidding war! They'll be easy for you to find, promise.

Mini-vacation!

I finished everything yesterday except the hem of the skirt which I did this morning! I want to make endless variations of the skirt and blouse - the cut and style of each is perfect and they go so well with everything! Now that I'm done I even feel a bit more prepared for my 7+ hour flight (not including stops)!

Sometime tomorrow I'll put the Etsy shop on vacation status and start packing for the trip (which will now be greatly reduced thanks to that skirt! see?!).

Because of my always-try-to-be-(more than)-prepared philosophy, I cannot go without leaving some links for you to peruse in my absence!

I'm not making my own bias tape so this will be finished tomorrow after I get wider bias tape for the neckline, face the armhole edges, cover the buttons and sew them on!

Big Flea Market

Yesterday was the Big Flea Market! I think within about 20 minutes of setting my foot inside I already had a huge bag filled with clothing! The booth that had vintage textiles & sewing stuff turned out to be the only one with racks of clothes, and I think I just about cleaned them out!

Unfortunately I've been bitten by that "how-on-Earth-could-I-ever-let-this-go-in-a-million-years?" bug, so some things I am keeping (for now):

Not seen here: a beautiful homemade red 50s dress with a sweetheart neckline, and a black netting dress from the 1930s that needs a little love and tenderness.

40s house dress: eBay, coral 40s dress from Southworth Antiques & Rare Books, 30s or 40s? 3-pc. gingham outfit from Upstairs Downstairs Antiques.

Ack - I didn't realize it's been over a week since I posted! Yesterday I went to Tea Tyme downtown for the first time and did a little shopping with my mom. My purchases are pictured above, and my mom got a wonderful navy blue suit from the early 60s - the jacket had wonderful details and the skirt had two zippers in the back, each with a hook and eye. I really wish I had gotten a picture!

I'm glad we went because the Big Flea Market was advertised everywhere, and I picked up some fliers that will take $1 off of admission. It's tomorrow, so I should be posting again soon!

After this weekend, the sewing pressure is on. I have a week to start (and finish) this little outfit on the left:

Lately I've noticed I have quite an affinity for blue. Blue skirts, blue dresses, blue shoes.. I like (and want) them all. I don't know what it is about the color that makes it stand out to me so much more than any other color, but I am half-expecting a group of singing Oompa Loompas to roll me away to a juicing room any minute.

The other night I removed two dresses from my closet, hung them up on the doors, and asked my dad to help me choose between the two for Luis' graduation. They were both blue. And then I asked him if wearing blue shoes was too much.

Oddly enough, blue isn't even my favorite color, green is, but for some reason I just don't see as many vintage dresses in that color! Getting to the point, here are some Etsy finds that I'm blue in the face for. (And here's hoping my Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory references stop here.)

All Shook Up

Last week, right up to Sunday, was packed with errands. I think almost everyday I was running to thrift stores, antique shops, and estate sales, or making trips for groceries, or returning library books..

Blurry thrift finds from the week.

I didn't mind it then, but really I'm a hermit, so a couple days or even a few hours of excitement and social interaction really wears me out. Fortunately this week will be my time of solitude before July kicks off.

- Fredericksburg Big Flea Market. There aren't any worthwhile flea markets in my area, but I have heard a lot of good things about this one. Hopefully I can go both days - see what's there Saturday, and get deals on Sunday!

I don't think anyone who reads the blog lives in my area, but it will also be in Washington, D.C. and Maryland, let me know if you plan on going to one!

- The Etsy store! I'd like to open it either the week of the flea market, or the next weekend, what do you think? Unfortunately either way, it will lead right into a five day absence in..

- California! My husband Luis (I don't think I've mentioned his name here - it's Luis!) is graduating from the DLI (Defense Language Institute) and I'll be visiting from the 21st-25th. I'm very excited and I've already bought two new (old) dresses for the occasion. :p

- Finally, July will end with my adorable niece's third birthday party! I'm really excited for her, she's been looking forward to this for months, haha! She and my sister actually made a cake the other week because it's all she talks about. I'll be making the cake and cupcakes for the party again, though it's going to be a bit of a tight fit (the day after I get back, the 26th)! Luckily I'll be able to get started on the decorations the week before.

And that's even leaving out things! What is everyone up to this upcoming month?

I almost feel guilty posting this but - I got lucky again!

At my #2 favorite antique store downtown, there's been a lonely dress hanging by the register for months. Every time I went in, I checked to see if any of the sellers had claimed it yet, and each time I got a 'no, sorry'.

Well, today I stopped in after I found my #1 closed ('Closed on Tuesdays' - I hope I remember that for next time), and inquired again. They called who they thought it belonged to and got a price! I left very happily, it in my bag, and tried it on as soon as I got home. It fits! I fear my newly-acquired luck will run out soon before I find more goodies for you all!

*Edit*: I forgot that I wanted to share this post made by stellatevintage! Someone found an old, black-and-white photo of a young girl in a feedsack dress, and soon after found the seemingly exact dress in her store!

Father's Day

I hope you are all having a great weekend with your fathers, especially if you're lucky enough to still be living with them like I am! Haha, just kidding. :) But I'd like to think he's had a good day so far (kicked off by this song), and we both enjoyed yesterday.

After our yard sale, we hurried to an estate sale I found out about on Craigslist. In exchange for what I thought was a paltry earning of $20, I walked back to the car with an armload of vintage clothing. Here are some of my favorites:

20s dress! Much to my surprise, all of the lace is in excellent condition.

We're almost halfway through 2009 now, and I have to say I've picked up a lot of new hobbies. As a few of you might know, my husband is in the Air Force and is currently training in California (and after that, more training in Texas and Washington). To counter the boredom, I've tried a lot of new things, and I think next I'd like to try selling some of the vintage clothes I come across! I just love the idea of giving old dresses a new lease on life.

I've always enjoyed meandering around auctions and antique shops since I was a little girl. My dad had a little booth in an antique mall that he stocked with old furniture he would find and repair, and he'd always take me on those outings to find a really special dresser or chair. He named his booth Reilly's Relics after me, and I'm going to call the Etsy shop the same thing. So keep an eye out for it!

It has a lot of mistakes that I thought would bother me more, but.. it's wearable!

Now for the treasures I unearthed:

Shoes! For $3! In a size 8! Those two in the middle are from the 50s, so.. holy crap! 50s shoes! For $3! In a size 8! One of the black pumps is missing its heel tip, but I don't have any occasions coming up fancy enough for them, so I don't need to worry about that now.

Blue suede shoes! If you've been wondering what's up with my titles, they're lyrics from the beginning of the song "Blue Suede Shoes" by Carl Perkins (I know not all of you listen to oldies, but you have all probably heard this song at least once). Just previously I had been joking with my dad that we both needed to find blue suede shoes, and then I actually went and found them! I thought it would be a harder task since they'd have to be vintage, as I don't wear leather, fur, wool, etc. (except in cases like these, when it's so old). My mom was so embarrassed by my shows of excitement that she walked away from me.

I also picked up a nice, roomy-but-not-too-roomy lime green bag that you can see here, and a 50s sheath dress I have listed for sale on Etsy here.

My outfit from yesterday: dress from traven7 on etsy with black cloth belt from a different dress. I don't tie very neat bows!

Today I recycled this outfit to hang out with my mom again. I had a couple coupons to use at Jo Ann's, but just about everything was on sale so I only got a chance to use one of them. I got some great cotton fabrics for midriff tops and a deep teal linen for this pattern:

My 'total savings' was $27, that's more than I spent! I don't want to sound too excited about new fabrics or new (old) patterns, because I'm still working on this gem:

Ignore all the blue markings! Those will wash out when the dress is laundered. The only steps left are the side closure and hem. I don't have many work-in-progress shots (hence no WIP post) because I sort of got into the 'zone' when working on it.

We headed downtown for a late lunch and afterward stopped by an antique store (Southworth Antiques & Rare Books) that had caught my eye previously because of a little sign in the window that said "Vintage clothing is back!" When we walked in the very sweet owner directed us to some very steep steps and as soon as I saw the multiple clothing racks I literally started dancing!

I'm going to wrap this post up tomorrow when I have pictures of all my goodies!

White Weddings and Dresses

I wouldn't wish the day I got married to be any different. It was perfect for Luis and I: just the two of us in a courthouse in Texas near the base he had just graduated from. I was never the type to plan out the day, thinking about flowers or seating arrangements, but if I knew anything about what I wanted, then it had to be a small affair (which it was). But sometimes I stumble upon the perfect mix of lace and romantic notions that makes me think maybe I'd like to renew my vows in a couple of years...

Impatience and Laziness

Something important I learned about sewing: laziness and perfectionism do not go hand in hand.

Yesterday I finally started Simplicity pattern 2884. The envelope said it was easy and, like a fool, I believe everything I read (not really). I noticed something was up when I saw it called for pleats, darts and etc. with nary more than "do this now" in the instructions.

Long story short ("Too late!"), at some point I cut my losses and turned the front half of the bodice into a halter top to wear around the house. It's very hot.

Luckily I have plenty of fabric and lining left over, although it may be a while until I try this again. I have my last sewing class tonight (re-scheduled from two weeks ago) so maybe I can convince the teacher I need private, free lessons.

I love this dress from eBay! It's very reminiscent of a house coat or dressing gown, but seeing as my peers leave the house in sweatpants with glittery words on their derrieres, I think it's perfectly suitable for wearing out! :)

It's weird, I kept waiting and waiting for spring and as soon as the weather brightened up, everyone started talking about summer! And here it is. I've never been a very big fan of hotter weather... I hate beaches, I don't like to tan, and my eyes are really sensitive, but there is one thing that may get me through the season:

Play suits! Or, really: midriff baring tops and high-waisted bottoms. I really don't think there is a better way to escape the heat while still retaining a little modesty and class.

Lately I have been watching old movies like it's my job, and last night was no different.

I absolutely loved this movie! I'm not usually one for song-and-dance numbers but it's really very charming when done in the 50's. Of course, even though the movie had my full attention, I couldn't help but notice all of their great outfits.

Please ignore the disservice I am doing this silk dress from eBay. I'd prefer it with a self-fabric belt and a pair of white wedges, but alas I have neither. When I got it in the mail I put it on, and paraded in front of my dad, wearing different pairs of shoes. My dad is my go-to guy when I want to make sure something looks right. He suggested black accessories but I just love the brightness of this dress too much to pair it with black, so I decided to just wear those white shoes.

Because there's a small white label on the collar inside the dress that looked like someone's name in chicken scratch, I assumed this dress was handmade but when I was hanging up the dress today to air out, I discovered a union label!

I loved the pattern immediately, although it almost came to a tie, in the category of "disgustingly cute", against this repro fabric of a cat holding a balloon (which has a cat face, I think).

We started the shorts in class (I talked about the pattern a couple weeks ago), and when I got home I finished by adding the elastic to the waistband and top stitching.

I'll probably have a picture of me wearing them soon, they're so comfortable! The seersucker fabric is so perfect for spring/summer, and I love that they're high-waisted.

I have conquered my fear of eBay! I had no idea that I could be missing out on anything by avoiding eBay's auction, as I had only imagined that it would be like having to sift through racks and racks of disorganized clothing in a cluttered thrift store, where even if you do find something it is not your size or the price is all wrong or there are stains or tears..

I'm happy to be proven wrong! I guess so far I have had luck on my side in that I've been home every time the bidding is near its end, so I haven't been 'sniped' or anything.

There goes the last of my birthday money!

I was able to win both of those dresses for less than $20 each! It's great to be able to score some of these vintage items at lower prices since I do intend on wearing them often, like I would with any other article of clothing.

But Etsy has its own perks, which I won't stop enjoying any time soon.

I'd rather have a Paper Doll

I guess a lot of people get their inspiration from flipping through magazines or following the runways, but I've really taken to looking at old sewing pattern envelopes.

If not because I hope to one day be skilled enough to buy the pattern (or a similar one) and make the dress or outfit my own, then because it gives me something to look for in other dresses, or a new idea on how to pair colors. I really want to fashion myself a removable peter pan collar, and a little bow that I can add to the neck or waist line, like in the third pattern. I fall in love with any dress that has bows on it.

That second pattern is my perfect summer outfit, but child-sized. Sweaty backs are the worst.

Simple Joys

You're all probably going to think I'm weird now, but I really wanted to post about this little thing I found when I went antiquing with my mom on Mother's Day..

A key holder! At first I had no clue what it was, I was just attracted to the bright green casing (and the $2 price tag), but once I opened it I loved it even more. I quickly had this vision of myself searching through my purse (I don't actually have one right now, I'm keeping an eye out for the perfect vintage one) for my keys, and whipping this little guy out.

It's still empty right now because I don't have any important keys to anything, but I can't wait to see it all filled up.

The Perfect White Dress

A few weeks ago, Solanah posted about a white dress she was considering dying, because all of its lovely features blended into the walls of the studio she took her photos in. I immediately jumped on it - I was so excited to find something I had been thinking about in the back of my head for a long, long time: the perfect white dress. And it was exactly my size!

It arrived a few days later and I was so excited to try it on! It fits perfectly and I love how all of the little details - the lace, bow at the collar, and shirred sleeves - add to the femininity of the dress. Thank you, Solanah!

There comes a time in every girl’s life when she has to ask herself, “How many more cocktail/party dresses do I need?”, when there is nary a soiree to attend.

Okay, so maybe not all girls have this problem, but I’m struggling right now. My constantly growing wardrobe of vintage dresses and separates also doubles as a collection, a hobby. I look for that familiar silhouette wherever I go, and it’s not price tags or lifeless garments on the hangers... I see history. I love imagining who owned the dress before me and just how long it took to travel into the hands of the person who ends up selling it to me.

The line between ‘wearable’ and ‘ooh, that’s so shiny and pretty’ often blurs. I want you, black dress with the gold embroidery and studded bodice. But if I can’t do you justice, and wear you out to a nice concert, play, or dinner, do I deserve you?

And you, silky grey dress. I’m sure one day I’d find an occasion for you. Maybe. But I want to wear you now, and you’re too delicate for running errands.

Neither of you are expensive. But if I buy you over practical, sleeveless summer items, am I a fool? Or do I side with the ‘collector’, because how often does such an item, that would fit me like a glove, come into my life? Especially now, 50 years after your creation?

Another Saturday Night

I've been meaning to post more outfit photos so here's one! It was quite hot out today so I wore the above dress to go antiquing with my dad. Right now this is one of my only dresses suited for spring/summer weather, a fact that needs to change soon.

I tried to keep an open mind as we meandered through each antique mall - I didn't want to be disappointed or feel like I wasted my time if I couldn't find any 40s-50s clothing, because just browsing each stall and trying on hats is fun enough. It mostly worked - when our trip drew to a close I felt pretty accomplished that I had taken a step forward in conquering my hat fear..

And I bought a little bag of cute vintage buttons, too! My sewing class starts Monday so I'm hoping I'll find a use for them soon. The buttons came from a stall that had a dresser with each drawer filled with baggies that were stuffed with buttons, old embroidery floss, trims, lace.. I had this urge to buy everything up and hoard it, lest I miss out on a great treasure, but I think I'll opt to stock up slowly.

The bowler hat in the picture is actually one of the first I tried on half-jokingly; but when I saw my reflection and didn't feel the need to turn and run away I was shocked and quickly was filled with affection for the little guy. I'm trying to date it, but am having trouble. It's a men's hat, and the inside labels say:
"Palais Royal
Lafayette, Ind."

and

"Chalfonte
Made by a Man's Hatter"

Palais Royal is apparently a big dance hall in Indiana that's been around since the early 1920's, but I'm curious as to if and why they'd sell hats there?

Tomorrow I'll take some better pictures of the hat solo in natural daylight, it has a cute little bow on the side.

For anyone else who is a new and/or inexperienced buyer of vintage fashions, here is a helpful website I found earlier, that gives a lot of insight on how to date clothing by the label and the zipper(!). Seeing clothing dated incorrectly on etsy is my new pet peeve!

Sunday my dad and I spent our morning perusing two local flea markets. I wished, apparently against reason, that I'd find some vintage treasures but no luck! At one I did stumble upon a box that had some cute vintage buttons, but I walked away for a moment and someone else snatched them up. I don't know what I would have done with them, if anything at all, but it was still a disappointment.

One of the things I like about Solanah’s blog Vixen Vintage is that I am constantly inspired to dress in a way I’ve previously written off as impossible for me to pull off without looking ridiculous - wiggle dresses? I’m too short. Hats? My head’s too big (it's not, that's paranoia). Never again will I limit myself by such silliness!

Both she and Emily (who blogs both at Inside the Black Apple and at Some Girls Wander) have introduced me to the necessities of owning a cape, as well. That’s right! You heard me! I’m thinking about coats despite the fact that I should be talking about bathing suits and sandals.

To be weather-appropriate, I’ve decided that I’d like to introduce something like these 50’s inspired capris to my spring/summer wardrobe:

I wasn’t very excited that for my third and fourth sewing classes, we’d be working on Simplicity Pattern 3799, but I’m hoping I’ll be able to take in the capris and give them more of a retro look, or else face the $75 price tag of the ones pictured above (and by face, I mean run away from). If it proves to be undoable, it’ll just be my sister’s lucky day!

From Sunday:

I had never noticed my uncle's stash of records before, and when I went closer to inspect, the first album I saw was by Buddy Holly & the Crickets. Grabbed it and politely demanded it be listened to now.

Played three games of Scrabble with my dad late into the night. After losing this round (so close!) I pushed for a third and finally won.

Haha, wow, how things have changed since this was taken! Less than 8 days to go! I don't know if I'm actually keeping busy or if time is pitying me, but whatever it is is working, all my days are running into each other.

I uploaded some pictures of finished projects, new ones, and a few other things to my flickr, so go ahead and add me as a contact if you haven't already!

Bloody

Yes, my leg is bloody, but super attractive with the addition of this apple. I couldn't be happier - this is a really nice memorial for my grandma - the apple featured is a Winchester Apple, which is not only where she lived but is also my favorite eating apple. 'Hope' was her middle name, and it's still mine. We also worked on the outline for my Greek mythology/Poseidon sleeve, which you can check out on flickr.

On a related note, I found this adorable golden apple platter the other week when thrifting:

I was quite excited to find it; golden apples make their way into many Greek myths, including the Judgment of Paris (which lead to the fall of Troy), so finding it while reading the Iliad is impeccable timing. I can't wait to find the perfect use/place for it!

I've been getting the urge to embroider something re: those golden apples, but after talking to Katie about our mutual love of M*A*S*H, I don't want to get sidetracked by any new projects before I finish my Hawkeye portrait!
